Jawai Bandh

Jawai Bandh is a dam which is built across the Jawai river, a tributary of Luni River. A village is also situated near the dam with the same name and a railway station on the Ajmer- Ahmedabad route. It comes under the Sumerpur Tehsil of Pali district in Rajasthan. The dam was built by Maharaja Umaid Singh of Jodhpur, which started on 12th May 1946 and completed in 1957. The village is spread over an area of 500 km. Jawai Bandh is the biggest dam in the western Rajasthan. The capacity of the dam is 7887.5 million cubic feet and covers an area of 102,315 acres of the cultivable command area. The height of the Dam is about 61.25 feet. Sei dam and kalibor dam are the feeder dams of the Jawai Dam.

It is also a winter paradise for migratory birds. Besides being a winter paradise, it is the main water supply source of Jodhpur city and parts of Pali district. The main aim of constructing this dam was to give sufficient water supply for irrigation to villages of Jalore district and Pali district. Jawai dam crocodile sanctuary and Kamleshwar Ji leopard sanctuary is situated nearby. One can see saris cranes, knob-billed duck in the dam. Demmossile, common eastern crane, bareheaded geese and migrating birds are found here during the winter. Crocodile basks on the dan shores. Panther, bear, Hyena, Wolf, Nilgai and Chinkara are found on the hills near the Dam.
